It’s no secret that many people have a fear of the dentist. That’s a big part of the reason why many people skip their regular dental visits, and perhaps one in six people don’t see a dentist for five years or more.
Part of a Nationwide Fad
In Japan, women have long been attracted to butlers. The combination of sharp dressing and willing servitude is apparently very appealing, and this has led to a lot of related trends. Manga (comics, but read by a large selection of the population) and dating shows feature men dressed as butlers. And a few years ago, apparently, butler cafes became very popular.
So the dentist, head of the PureCure dental practice, dresses as a butler to attempt to put his female patients at ease.
The message is clear: your dentist is your servant. It’s natural for many people to view their dentist as an authority figure, the way we do doctors. After all, dentists have a great deal of education, they tell us how to brush our teeth, and give us advice about what procedures we might need. The downside of this is that it makes the dentist even more intimidating than he needs to be.
And on top of this, the dentist offers additional services that cater to the butler–dare we say?–fetish. He offers a pampering service called “Butler Lap Pillow Brushing,” which includes a tooth cleaning and aroma therapy–and, as the name implies, you can put your head in his lap while he brushes your teeth.
