You may think that we only talk about how important your smile is because we’re cosmetic dentists. However, the  American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has put together a first impression guide that assembles research about the role of your smile in making a good first impression.

Your Smile Is Remembered

Now, of course, the AACD guide begins by talking about your smile, but this isn’t just because it’s a dental guide, it’s based on research. When people are asked what they remember most about a person, more of them say their smile (48%) than anything else. In fact, what a person said is remembered by only about half as many people (25%), and a person’s clothes (9%) and odor (8%) only occasionally make an impression..

The guide also says that your smile is one of three key aspects of making a strong impression with your physical person, including your weight and your posture.

Your Smile Conveys Your Personality

Previous research by the AACD shows that people make many conclusions about you on the basis of your smile. People with an unattractive smile are thought to be less successful, poorer, less intelligent, and less successful with the opposite sex. This new guide focuses on just two of the more important conclusion people will make about you. Thirty-seven percent of people will think you are less attractive and 25% of people think you are less confident if you have a flawed smile.
