Every day, dental implants offer better lives to countless people, who might otherwise endure chewing difficulties and social stigmas associated with missing teeth. Unfortunately, some people aren’t suited for implants, due to certain lifestyle choices or physical ailments which promote rejection. Now, researchers seem to have stumbled onto a strategy that may allow these people to receive dental implants, thanks to a new material that promotes greater biocompatibility.
Faster Bone Integration
Although they offer substantial benefits to many people, dental implants aren’t well-suited for the elderly, diabetics, smokers, and people who have osteoporosis or cancer. In many instances, these conditions prevent new prostheses from properly integrating into bone, resulting in implantation failure.
To see if they might be able to solve this problem, researchers at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Castellón developed a new implant coating made of a biodegradable material that reduces the amount of time it takes for prostheses/bone integration. According to the developers, the implants are covered with the biodegradable coating, which dissolves once it comes into contact with human bone. As it dissolves, the coating releases bioactive molecules and silicon compounds which promote bone-generation in a relatively short amount of time.
An Important Development
According to the scientists who developed the new biodegradable implant material, their research is especially important, because it allows people to avoid common problems associated with missing teeth. Too often, when people fail to replace a missing tooth, they suffer from bite alignment problems and periodontal diseases. Thanks to implants, people are able to avoid these problems, while also regaining full masticatory functions and higher self-confidence.
