If you have a fear of the dentist, it might feel easiest to avoid regular dental exams altogether. The anxiety that takes over before and during the appointment might not feel worth the dental health. Some people find it so difficult to sit still while they’re at the dentist that they might put off their visits as well. Although you think you’re benefiting yourself by doing this, you’re actually not. Skipping your dental exams and other dental appointments can lead to more cavities and dental problems down the line.

Dr. Hahn understands it’s not always easy for everyone to make it to their dental appointments due to anxiety or other factors. To help you feel more relaxed and at ease during your appointments, we offer sedation dentistry. Contact Dr. Hahn, your Columbia, SC sedation dentist to schedule an appointment.

What is Sedation Dentistry and How Can It Help?

Have you ever canceled a dentist appointment because you felt too much anxiety about it? If you have ever canceled a dentist appointment due to anxiety or because you knew the experience would feel uncomfortable, sedation dentistry offers you relief. At Smile Columbia Dentistry, we offer oral conscious sedation to help patients feel relaxed before and during their upcoming procedure. We can even give you sedation to help you sleep the night before because we know it can sometimes keep you up at night.

Oral conscious sedation is a pill you take that helps you feel very relaxed. The medicine is a sedative much like valium. You will be completely conscious during your procedure so you can ask a question or follow Dr. Hahn’s instructions if necessary. Oftentimes, patients will fall asleep during their appointment because they feel so relaxed.

We instruct our patients to take their pill about a half-hour before their appointment. It’s important to have someone drive you to and from your appointment because the medicine will prevent you from doing so. Once the medicine kicks in during your visit with us, you will feel completely relaxed. The relaxation will also help you experience less pain. The sedation will last for your entire procedure so you have nothing to worry about.

Is Sedation Right For You?

Patients who have a strong gag reflex, find it difficult to sit still, experience excess pain or discomfort during procedures, patients who can’t get or stay numb, and patients who experience anxiety can all benefit from sedation.
