Parenting can take a significant toll on our physical and mental well-being. So much so, in fact, many people blame their children for making them feel older than they really are. Now, new research suggests these tongue-in-cheek complaints may actually be founded in reality.
Looking at Bees
Scientists have found that “parenting” duties appear to accelerate aging in bees. Responsible for taking care of the queen’s new larvae during the summer, bee caregivers show a drastic reduction in brain function when compared to genetically-similar bees, which are responsible for leaving the hive to collect pollen. Appearing in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the research showed that caregiving bees lived much shorter lives than did worker bees, which are not responsible for taking care of the hive’s progeny.
What Ages Us?
Similar to bees, humans endure severe mental and physical stress while parenting. Although it’s obvious that parental burdens have the ability to make us feel rundown; it’s not necessarily clear if they can really make us age prematurely.
That said, some things can make us age faster, including a lack of exercise, poor diets and sun exposure. Additionally, most people are shocked to find out that their dentures can have a huge impact on their physical appearances by making them look older than they really are.
Since they don’t support facial tissues very well, traditional dentures often promote the development of chin wrinkles, lip lines and jowls. They may also make our chins and noses appear closer together, resulting in an unattractive sunk-in look.
