Hip-hop star Fetty Wap, a regular visitor to South Carolina who has family ties in the Palmetto State, recently made headlines not for his music, but for his teeth. The certified-platinum artist caught eyes with a bright, balanced smile courtesy of porcelain veneers placed by a cosmetic dentist.

A Beautiful Smile ‘My Way’

Fetty Wap, nee Willie Maxwell II, is known in part for the Top 10 single “My Way.” Last month, he decided his way included a new smile.

According to a TMZ report, Fetty sought cosmetic dentistry treatment to correct misaligned teeth and whiten his smile. He received 20 porcelain veneers for his top and bottom teeth, and he now has a symmetrical smile that looks naturally vibrant.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, but durable, slivers of dental-grade ceramic that are affixed to the surfaces of your natural teeth to mask cosmetic imperfections. Porcelain veneers can correct teeth that are chipped or cracked, crooked or gapped, or disproportionately shaped.

They are custom made to fit each person’s unique smile, and they are colored to match your teeth for a natural-looking appearance. Of course, that doesn’t matter as much if you get veneers on all your visible teeth like Fetty did. Porcelain veneers may also mask stained teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening.

Veneers require two visits. The first to obtain impressions of the teeth and prepare the teeth for the veneers, and the second to place the veneers and ensure proper fit. Veneers are resistant to discoloration, and with proper care they can provide a beautiful smile for decades.

Veneers: Not Just for the Rich and Famous

In the coverage of Fetty Wap’s veneers, much was made of their reported cost: $80,000. However, Fetty received 20 veneers, and it was not noted whether he received additional dental treatment. Porcelain veneers are often part of a smile makeover, in which multiple cosmetic dentistry procedures are used to achieve the desired results.

Most patients who are good candidates for porcelain veneers don’t require them for a majority of their teeth. The number of veneers necessary varies based on each person’s condition and aesthetic goals; some need just a couple for a well-aligned smile, while others may benefit from a half-dozen or more for a uniform appearance (consider how many teeth you see when you look in a mirror and smile).

Though porcelain veneers are versatile, they are not the best option for everyone with minor tooth damage or aesthetic imperfections.
