Nobody likes discomfort; however, for numerous people, chronic pain is a part of daily life. In search of relief, some people will resort to trying virtually anything, including alternative treatments that make bold claims. The Wall Street Journal recently looked at a holistic Chinese pain remedy to see if it actually offered in real relief; and their findings weren’t particularly impressive.
Focusing on Hands
According to Chinese experts, by applying a small amount of pressure to the area between the thumb and forefinger, you can relieve both pain and anxiety. Called hegu, this specific area of the hand is supposed to be a special pressure point which affects numerous areas of the human body.
The Wall Street Journal recently published an article profiling the alternative treatment. According to the publication, researchers out of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore conducted a study to see if hegu really offered any sort of pain relief. Interestingly, the Chinese remedy proved relatively ineffective in most patients; however, a few reported a slight dulling of extreme pain. Although they don’t know for sure, the researchers say hegu could possibly offer slight pain relief by stimulating endorphins and/or blood circulation. With that being said, it isn’t clear how much of the benefits were the result to placebo effects.
Could it Help with TMJ Disorder?
A trying condition that causes all sorts of debilitating symptoms, TMJ disorder (TMD) can make life very difficult. Unfortunately, TMD responds poorly to treatments that fail to address the root cause of the problem: a misaligned bite. Since hegu does nothing to fix a person’s bite, it isn’t likely to provide much if any relief to people who suffer from TMD.
