Due to COVID-19, Smile Columbia Dentistry is currently open for all dental emergencies. You might be wondering what exactly is considered a dental emergency? Usually, if there’s any sort of physical damage, severe pain, swelling, or bleeding, it’s likely an emergency. If it’s just a cosmetic problem, it can wait. Find out what’s considered a dental emergency and when you should seek care from Dr. Adam Hahn.

Loose Tooth

One of the first signs of a dental emergency is a loose tooth. Although this is normal for a child or teenager with baby teeth to experience, it’s not normal for adults. If one of your teeth feels loose, leave it alone and contact us for help.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Any excessive pressure can knock out a tooth. Whether you’re in a car accident or take a bad fall, if you knock out a tooth, you need to act fast if you want to save it. Start by applying gauze to the socket to get the bleeding under control. Then, search for the knocked-out tooth. Once you find it, pick it up by the crown and gently rinse it underwater. Store the tooth away in a cup of saliva, milk or saltwater and contact us for an immediate appointment. There is a one to a two-hour window where we’re most able to save the knocked out tooth and replace it in your mouth.

Severe Toothache

When a toothache goes from a dull pain to excruciating, this isn’t normal. If you’re experiencing a mild toothache, brush and floss your teeth to remove any possible debris between your teeth or gums. If the toothache persists or gets worse, please contact us for an appointment so we can relieve you of your pain.

Dental Abscess

When a tooth becomes abscessed, it has a serious infection typically at the root of the tooth. This can occur from an untreated cavity or gum disease. Symptoms may include swelling, fever, a bad taste in the mouth, or pus. If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to seek treatment immediately. An untreated infection is dangerous for your overall health.

Missing, Cracked or Broken Tooth/Restorations

If you notice any missing dental fillings, this is considered a dental emergency. While it doesn’t require immediate attention, you should take care of it promptly. If any other restorations like dental bridges, crowns, veneers, dentures become broken or cracked, it’s a good idea to contact us to have them fixed. We also recommend the same course of action if one of your teeth becomes cracked or broken.
