A cosmetic dentist is many things, including a doctor, an artist, and a scientist. But one thing a cosmetic dentist is not is a mind reader. If you want us to be able to give you the best results from your cosmetic dentistry, you have to be prepared to talk to us openly and honestly.
Here are 5 things you have to be prepared to share if you want to achieve a beautiful smile.
Your oral health is closely interlinked with your overall health. There are many health conditions that can significantly impact the health of your teeth, both right now and in the future. If you’re not prepared to share details of your overall health, we won’t be able to help you as much as you or we would like.
This includes sharing your current prescriptions as well as any over-the-counter medications or natural supplements that you take on a regular basis. Medications and supplements can have significant side effects that affect your oral health.
At-Home Care Routine
Your oral hygiene is probably the single greatest determiner of your oral health, and it will affect how your restorations survive. We might make some adjustments to your treatment plan depending on what type of oral care routine you have and are likely to have.
This may seem obvious, but fully a quarter of people lie to their dentist about flossing. If you lie to your dentist about anything, it will prevent you from getting the best results from your procedure.
Feelings about Your Current Smile
We need to know where we’re starting from in terms of what really bothers you about your smile. You might be used to censoring yourself around others when it comes to your smile, not wanting to share your true feelings because you’re afraid it will sound trivial or selfish, but if you want us to help you get your new beautiful smile, we have to really understand how you’re feeling.
Goals for Future Smile
And just as you have to share your current feelings, you also have to be willing to be honest with us about what you want to achieve with your smile makeover. If you can’t really share your feelings with us about what you want your smile to look like, we can’t achieve it.
Feel free to dream–speak of your ideals. We can achieve a lot more in cosmetic dentistry these days than you might ever have thought possible. We’ll let you know if we can’t actually achieve everything you’re dreaming of. We’re good at setting realistic expectations, but it would be a shame if we could achieve your dreams but just didn’t know about them because you didn’t tell us.
Speaking of realistic expectations, unfortunately budget has to be a part of any treatment plan discussion with your cosmetic dentist. The good news is that we offer flexible financing and payment options so that we can help make your smile makeover affordable.
But we can’t do that if you’re not prepared to tell us what “affordable” means for you.
